Kazakhstan as a Rail Transit Hub: Routes, Documents, and Logistics Guide

Kazakhstan is the key transit corridor between China, Russia, and Europe. Learn about main routes, cargo types, SMGS documentation, and how to find wagons for transit freight across Eurasia.

Kazakhstan occupies a strategic position on the Eurasian map: the country's railways carry the main corridors between China and Europe, and between Russia and Central Asian nations. Transit freight makes up a significant share of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) cargo turnover and creates constant demand for wagons and cargo.

Main Transit Corridors

China — Kazakhstan — Russia — Europe

The primary route of the "New Silk Road". Cargo from China (containers, equipment, consumer goods) travels west through Dostyk/Altynkol — via Astana and Aktobe to the Russian border. Transit time: 12–18 days to Moscow, 18–25 days to Europe.

Russia — Kazakhstan — Uzbekistan / Turkmenistan

Southbound route: Russian cargo (metals, coal, chemicals) transits through Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and beyond. Return flow — cotton, fruit, textiles from Central Asia.

Caspian Corridor

Aktau — Baku — Tbilisi — Turkey route for cargo bypassing Russia. Used for oil products, grain, and containers. The rail leg ends at Aktau port, then continues by ferry.

Most Common Transit Cargoes

  • Containers (China → Europe) — fastest-growing segment
  • Grain (Kazakhstan → ports, Russia → Central Asia)
  • Oil products and chemicals
  • Metals and steel products
  • Coal (Russia → China via Kazakhstan)
  • Machinery and equipment

Documentation for Transit Shipments

Transit freight in CIS is processed under SMGS (Agreement on International Railway Freight Traffic). Key documents:

  1. 1SMGS waybill — primary document for international rail freight
  2. 2Transit declaration (for customs clearance)
  3. 3Cargo certificates (where required)
  4. 4Contract with transit carrier or forwarder
  5. 5Transit permit (for specific cargo categories)

💡 For transit through Kazakhstan, coordinate your route with KTZ in advance — some sections have capacity constraints, especially during peak season.

Finding Wagons for Transit Freight

Transit shipments require precise planning: the wagon must be at the origin station on the right date, with all documents ready, and pass customs without delays. A delay at one section means idle time for the entire consist.

  • Search for wagons accounting for customs clearance time (+1–3 days)
  • Verify document compatibility for all countries on the route
  • Account for gauge change at the China border (1435 mm → 1520 mm)
  • Monitor border crossing congestion — queues can reach 5–7 days

How Raily Helps with Transit Freight

Raily monitors requests on all major transit routes: China–Kazakhstan, Russia–Central Asia, and the Caspian corridor. Create a request with the full route — the system finds matching wagons or cargo at each leg.

"Container freight volume on the China–Europe route via Kazakhstan has grown more than 20x over the past decade — and continues to rise."
